Juicing machines these days use enormous hydraulic presses to apply extreme amounts of pressure on the fruit. They press out the juice and it can be quite a brutal sight to see. However, it is an extremely fast process, and juice is created in the hundreds of gallons in just moments, extracted from huge amounts of fruit. Using a hand juicer, on the other hand, would take a lot longer.

That famous hand juicer we all know so well, the one with the little upside down spiky orange in the middle sitting like an island in the middle of a jug to catch the juice, was manufactured in huge numbers. It was the original hand juicer to be produced on such a scale. Various materials such as metal or glass were used, and by cutting your fruit in half and squeezing the fleshy part of the fruit over the upside down orange, you could squeeze out the juice into the little jug it sat in. It was always a messy affair, with a lot of clean up needed afterward, but it remains a nostalgic memory in most families.

A later addition to the model was handles, so that the fruit could be squeezed without needing to touch it directly with hands. It is common for a hand juicer to stand tall, and you have probably seen such ones at outdoor events where people make homemade lemonade with the juice of lemons, the fleshy part of the lemon also tossed in, and a ton of water and sugar. If you drink this homemade lemonade, you will discover they also include the pips and leave quite a mess where they were made.

The next model in the progression of hand juicers was one that sits on the table, standing vertical, and also with a handle. This design came from Rival way back in the 1920s. The typical method that followed was placing the fleshy half of the fruit onto the juicer part. But the handle gave much greater power. By pulling the handle, the squeezing action was taken care of. This was the beginning of the next rage of hand juicer models.

The technology of juicing both vegetables and fruit has continued to develop, although the hand juicer has found some tougher challenges with leafy vegetables and the more solid crunchy fruits like apples. Some models do offer a handle that allows you to crush these more stubborn foods and squeeze out the juice.

There are groups of people that also like to preserve the flesh of the fruit and the seeds inside, along with catching the juice, and for this, special filters were designed to trap the squeezed fruit and all its parts. Another popular model was the reamer, which spun and the action of the rotation squeezed the fruit placed inside, resulting in juice.
